FROM PODIUM DEBUT TO JEREZ FINALE: ANDREAS SHÄFER ON RACING AN HARLEY DAVIDSON IN THE BRL EUROPEAN CUP

He is one of Harley-Davidson’s standard-bearers in the BRL European Cup. German rider Andreas Schäfer, with years of experience behind him, has embraced the project with remarkable enthusiasm. On his debut, he immediately climbed onto the podium — a thrilling start, wasn’t it?

Starting with a podium gave me incredible momentum and made me even more excited about the whole project. It was amazing to see what our little “Baggy” is capable of.

Rijeka brought electronic issues and a double DNF, but mechanics from other teams tried to help you get back out for Race 2. Did you expect that level of solidarity?

Where there is light, there is always shade. After decades traveling across paddocks all over Europe, it was really great to see that the paddock spirit exists within BRL Europe, despite its competitiveness.

You had to miss Round 3 in Portugal — what happened?

Unfortunately, we couldn’t fix the issues in time for Portugal, partly because we decided to completely renew the bike’s electronics from the ground up. With the final in Spain ahead, the team is now working under high pressure and putting in a lot of extra hours on the motorcycle.

Racing a Harley-Davidson is demanding. What’s the unique feeling it gives you?

Given my rather proud age of 59, the Harley is just the right bike for me. I especially like that people don’t expect anyone to ride a Harley this fast on a racetrack. When spectators see what’s possible with such a machine, some of them are truly amazed.

Now all eyes turn to Jerez, the season finale. What are your expectations?

I simply want to reach the finish line on Sunday and celebrate the success wholeheartedly with my team and everyone involved.

Beyond the racing, the paddock will be full of Harley fans with a big Saturday night rally and party. Ready for selfies and the spotlight?

I always enjoy talking with enthusiasts, and I’m certainly open for selfies. I can hardly wait — I’m looking forward to some honest, down-to-earth racing.
